Dear Friends,
On Friday we learned a new word. It is the Hawaiian word “aloha”. It has many meanings. It means hello and good-bye, I miss you, I am proud of you, I am doing my very best.
I went looking for the spirit of aloha in the classroom…
What is it?
A- It’s a bridge. We’re building it this way.
Where is the bridge going? Is it going over an ocean, or a lake or a river.
B- It’s going over a wavy river.
Is it a walking bridge or a bridge for cars or bicycles?
A- A walking bridge.
If you went on this bridge where would you go?
A- Um, a spooky hayride.
Is this the bridge to the spooky hayride?
A and B- nods and smiles
Does that make it a spooky bridge?
A- shakes his head.
Are you going to use all the pieces?
A- We’re trying to!
What did you make?
L- It’s a puppet.
Is it a boy or a girl puppet?
L- It’s a boy.
What kind of boy? Does he go to school ? Is he a Daddy?
L- nods. He’s a Daddy. I made a baby and a Mom at home.
Now you have the whole family!
L- smiles
Tell me what you did to make it.
L- I do two pieces of paper and then I taped them together.
Why do you need to tape them together?
L- So your hand doesn’t show when you put it in.
How did you figure that out? Was Haneen doing that at home or just you?
L- Just me.
You are using your awesome brain power!
L-nods and smiles
M- This is a robot that can turn into a people.
Did you make anything else?
M- (points)This is a boat. (points) This is a radar car.
What is a radar car?
M- A car that looks for a zombie.
What does this guy do? (points)
M- He transforms.
What does he transform into?
M- He transforms into a car that speeds.
M- My pattern is yellow-yellow-orange, yellow-yellow-orange, yellow-yellow-orange…
How many beads do you have on here?
M- Thirty.
That’s a big number. You know how to count big numbers!
M- Yeah.
How do you know how to count big numbers?
M- In my home.
What did you do in your house?
M- I measure all my home.
How do you measure your home?
M- Like this. (demonstrates counting footsteps)
Are you measuring with your footsteps?
M- nods
Do you have a big home or a little home?
M- Um, a big home!
With lots of footsteps?
M- Yeah!
What were we doing here?
M- We did the rest of the letters.
Anything else?
R- We did it altogether.
What did we do with the markers?
A- We were doing the ABCs.
Did we do anything special when we were doing them? Hmm?
R and M – Umm…
Look at the colours. Did we do any old colours?
M- We did a pattern.
What was the pattern?
A- Purple-red-green, purple-red-green.
That’s a hard pattern. Did we get mixed up?
A- No.
Aloha!
Love,
Miss Parliament
